Control of bleeding March 2018 | by EMauthor •The best way of controlling bleeding is by applying direct digital pressure, this is much safer and more effective than amateurish effort to grasp bleeding vessels with a haemostat in the middle of a pool of blood, the pressure should be applied for at least 10 minutes •After the bleeding has stopped or decreased further inspection of the wound might allow you to ligate individual bleeding vessels if you have the experience, seek senior doctor help if in doubt •Wounds with torrential bleeding or obvious arterial bleeding should have pressure applied continuously, patient resuscitated if needed and then referred to the relevant speciality urgently
