Quadriceps rupture

Can involve the quadriceps tendon, the patellar ligament, fracture of patella or avulsion of tibial tuberosity

Can happen after sudden muscular contraction of quadriceps, e.g. gym sessions

Clinical features

oThere will be difficulty in standing after sudden muscular effort

oThere may be inability to straight leg raise (best to test resisted straight leg raise)

oThere may be inability to extend the knee

oA gap may be felt below or above the patella

Refer all these cases to orthopaedics
