Abscesses

March 2018 | by EMauthor

These are treated by incision and drainage and not by antibiotics in the majority of cases

Cutaneous abscess

Will require incision and drainage under adequate anaesthesia

Small abscess can be drained in the department, discuss with consultant if in doubt

Large or deep abscesses should be referred to the surgeons

Breast abscess

Usually occur in lactating breast

If they present very early ( within 24 to 48 hours) can be treated with antibiotics initially

If they present late or are frankly fluctuant they should be referred to the surgeons
