Surgery

As Emergency Physicians although we do not perform major surgery, we must strive to be clinical diagnosticians of equal if not greater aptitude than a senior surgeon. To that end, abdominal symptoms (perhaps more so than in any system) can be vague and nonspecific. The best preparation for suspected surgical pathology in the ED is gaining familiarity with the guidance and evidence relating to immediate and initial surgical investigations; in particular the negative predictive value (NPV) of a so-called ‘normal result’. In doing so, you will arm yourself with the knowledge of what you--and your patient--require from a surgical consultation. |
