Chest pain March 2018 | by EMauthor Chest pain represents a huge burden on the ED. Much of this may be trivial; but if there is one presentation worth over-investigating it is chest pain. Ischaemic heart disease is, in general, thought to be under-recognised in UK Emergency Departments and should generally be the underlying differential diagnosis (see below). Remember with each patient who may require hospital admission, your responsibility is to that individual patient, regardless of the bed state or the telephoned ‘advice’ of a colleague who has a completely different paradigm than you. The differentials to exclude: •Ischaemic heart disease •Pulmonary embolism •Aortic dissection •Pneumothorax •Other cardiac e.g. pericarditis •Pneumonia •Others
