Collateral ligament tears March 2018 | by EMauthor Medial collateral ligament •Valgus (abduction) stress to the leg •Swelling and tenderness over medial aspect of knee •Minor injury will result in tear of superficial part of ligament (sprain) •In severe or complete rupture, injury to the medial meniscus or cruciate ligament may occur •Assess for complete rupture by applying valgus stress in 30o flexion after adequate analgesia and/or Entonox •Minor sprains can be treated with tubigrip support and analgesia with A&E follow up in a week time •If there is suspicion of complete rupture with laxity and especially if associated with tense knee effusion, refer to orthopaedics Lateral collateral ligament •Rarer than medial •May be associated with or confused with fracture of head of fibula •Treat on same lines as the medial ligament injury |
