Femoral fractures

Shaft of femur fractures

•Administer intravenous analgesia, ideally IV opiates titrated to patient needs

•Assess for shock and blood loss

•Take blood for x-match and other tests

•Set up an intravenous line and start IV fluids

•Administer Femoral nerve block (seek senior help)

•Apply skin traction with Kendrick (KTS) or Thomas splint

oLocated in a large box in the Trauma Bay in Resus

•Refer to orthopaedics

 Key point:  Document the time of application of traction, and document that the splint must be returned to ED

Supracondylar fracture

•Assess for distal neurovascular function

•The rest of management is as for femoral shaft fractures

Condylar fractures

•As for femoral shaft fractures
