General principles

The hospital is a 650 bed District General hospital and an affiliated teaching site of University College London, University of Essex, and Anglia Ruskin University. The Trust encompasses Basildon Hospital and also the adjacent Essex Cardiothoracic Centre as well as Orsett Hospital. Currently the Emergency Department sees around 145,000 patients a year making us one of the busiest departments in the country. We run our own minor injuries where doctors of all grades work alongside Emergency Nurse Practitioners. We are a Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU), Major Trauma Unit (MTU) and we also see out-of-hospital Primary PCI via the CTC.
