Observation Unit (Clinical Decision Unit) March 2018 | by EMauthor The department has a small Clinical Decision Unit (Observation Unit) with 4 beds and 6 chair spaces. There is a proforma for transfer to CDU which must be signed by the most senior available shop floor doctor prior to transfer to CDU. The front page has some absolute contraindications. Ultimately, please be confident that the patient is stable before transfer. Pearls and pitfalls •There is no dedicated CDU doctor therefore the patient remains under your care after transfer •Once a patient is referred to a speciality they cannot be transferred to CDU. Specialities do not have admission rights to CDU, only the ED does. •Patients requiring physiotherapy or Frailty referral can be transferred to CDU provided the team can review the patient within a reasonable timeframe. Therefore, out-of-hours patients requiring frailty should be referred to the medical team. This is currently being reviewed. •Do not admit patients to CDU to go to Medical ambulatory care in the morning: such patients should be admitted under the medical team.
