Irritable Hip

Also called transient synovitis

Unknown aetiology but may follow upper respiratory tract infection

The child will be systemically well

There may be tenderness over the hip joint and some limitation of movement

X-ray may be normal or may show mild to moderate hip effusion

WCC , CRP and ESR are usually normal or minim ally elevated

Differential diagnosis include septic arthritis or SUFE, if these condition can be excluded then the child does not admission

Arrange a follow up initially within 2 – 3 days, discuss with consultant whether the follow up is with ED or fracture clinic
