Perthes' disease March 2018 | by EMauthor •Also known as osteochondritis or avascular necrosis of the hip •Affect older age group than transient synovitis •Presentation is usually of chronic, mild and dull hip pain, groin or knee pain •Child is usually systemically well •Early radiological features can be quite subtle although in the later stages of the disease the features of avascular necrosis and collapse of the femoral head are obvious •If suspected, discuss the case with EM consultant or orthopaedics to arrange a follow up Key point: have a low index of suspicion and cast-iron follow up arrangements; as although early features can be subtle, later stages of the disease involve avascular necrosis and collapse of the femoral head. |
