Nail bed injuries March 2018 | by EMauthor •This is an important group of injuries that is often improperly treated, especially in children, that can lead to significant morbidity •Assess nail bed clinically •X-ray for bony injury •If you suspect laceration to nail bed, the only way is to avulse the nail and examine the bed directly, nail bed laceration will need suturing using fine absorbable sutures like 5/0 vicryl, the nail should then be cleaned and repositioned in the nail fold, seek senior advice and help •All partly avulsed nail should have the nail replaced accurately in the nail fold, this will require proper local anaesthesia. •In small children this often require referral to the plastic surgery unit •Review nail bed lacerations that you have sutured in the review clinic after 3-5 days |
