Osgood–Schlatter disease

A very common condition affecting preadolescent children, predominantly males

Characterised by pain over the anterior knee exacerbated by activity

There is tenderness over the tibial tuberosity, which may be enlarged and indurated, the knee joint is normal

Radiographs usually show soft tissue swelling and sometimes thickening of the tibial tuberosity

The disease is self limiting and require may restrain from strenuous physical activity

Severe symptoms may benefit from a period of using crutches for 2 – 3 weeks, in exceptional circumstances a POP cylinder may be required

Some form of follow up is needed, depending on severity arrange a GP follow up in 2 – 3 weeks time
