Pre-patellar / Infra-patellar bursitis

Pre-patellar bursitis (Housemaid’s knee)

•Inflammation of the pre-patellar adventitious bursa, usually produced by kneeling

•There is pain, redness and swelling over the pre-patellar region, there should be no joint effusion. Cellulitis may be noted

•Treatment consists of oral flucloxacillin and penicillin with NSAID. If there is marked cellulitis, then an initial stat iv penicillin should be given and a review after 48 hours is arranged

•Be careful to exclude septic arthritis of the knee, if in doubt seek senior advice or orthopaedic on call

Infra-patellar bursitis (clergyman’s knee)

•inflammation of the infra-patellar bursa

•Treatment is similar to the above
