Pre-tibial lacerations March 2018 | by EMauthor •The main problem with tibial lacerations is the poor blood supply which predisposes to ischaemia and or infection to the flap •In young healthy patients these wounds are treated like any other wounds •For middle aged and elderly people they are treated with special care oClean the wound thoroughly oTry to spread the flapped skin over as much as possible of the wound area and secure the edges with steristrips •These wounds should never be sutured in the elderly •Wounds with large area of skin loss should be referred to the plastic surgery unit who now have an urgent pre-tibial clinic •Otherwise, review these wounds in the dressing clinic in 5-7 days, wounds that show extensive sloughing of the skin may be referred to plastic surgery then •These wounds can take a long time to heal (weeks or months) so explain that to the patient |
