Puncture wounds March 2018 | by EMauthor •These wounds carry the risk of infection, both tetanus and other bacterial infection. The most common type is patients stepping on nails •Sometimes there is risk of deep structure damage, so assess for neurovascular status •If there is suspicion of foreign body then x-ray •Debride the wound and irrigate it thoroughly •Prophylactic antibiotics will not necessarily prevent infection, but it is prudent to prescribe flucloxacillin or erythromycin •These are tetanus prone wounds so check tetanus status |
