Retained Vaginal Foreign Bodies March 2018 | by EMauthor •If in children, inform the Paediatric and the Gynaecology Registrars •Mostly retained tampons •Can be removed safely in the accident and emergency department with careful speculum examination and removal with sponge forceps •Beware of toxic shock syndrome, the clinical features include oPyrexia >39C oHypotension oWidespread maculo-papular rash oManifestation of systemic toxicity such as diarrhoea, raised CK or myalgia, raised urea and creatinine, thrombocytopenia, drowsiness and confusion •If toxic shock syndrome is suspected then oIV access and IV fluid oBlood for FBC, Blood culture, U&Es, Clotting oStart IV Flucloxacillin oRefer to the OBGYN Registrar •Don’t forget to remove the retained tampon |
