Chemicals in the eye March 2018 | by EMauthor •The immediate treatment is thorough irrigation of the eye with saline, aiming at neutral pH of the tears. Always use amethocaine or benoxylate •Remove all solid particles carefully, check under the eyelids •Examine the conjunctiva for chemosis •Stain the eye with fluorescein for corneal burn, assess the damage oMild burns confined to the conjunctiva can be treated with chloramphenicol and ophthalmology referral next day oMore extensive damage and or corneal involvement needs treatment with chloramphenicol and referral to ophthalmology same day •Superglue in the eye can cause lid adhesion and/or epithelial damage, ask for senior help or refer oIn adults, the lids can be separated by gently fracturing the dried brittle glue and then removing any solids from the fornices oChildren may require GA, refer •All lime burns should be referred to ophthalmology after initial treatment |
