Causes can be

oInfection

oConjunctivitis can be viral or bacterial, as its difficult to differentiate, treat with chloramphenicol eye cream

oKeratitis or corneal ulcer is important to diagnose, use flourescen stain. Beware viral keratitis. All need referral

Non infection

oIritis, associated with photophobia and, if severe, with visual impairment. Refer

oAcute narrow angle glaucoma, hard eye ball, visual disturbances. Refer

Never use steroids in the emergency department
