Corneal abrasions

Present with foreign body sensation, eye discomfort and photophobia

Examine the cornea with fluorescein stain under ultraviolet light

Assess the extent and the depth of the abrasion


Treatment


Treat with chloramphenical eye cream 4 hourly for 4 days

Eye pad can help, keeping the eyelids closed promotes healing

Control pain with analgesia and cycloplegic or similar (cyclopentolate 1% eye drops)

Never prescribe local anaesthetic drops as they delay healing

Can be discharged, will need ophthalmic follow up if still painful after 72 h
